You can only push consumers so far before rebellion. There will suddenly be a black market for old non-connected thermostats. Wifi cards in appliances will get destroyed, people are sheep only so long

What CA really needs is an aggressive storage plan. Batteries are a start but unfortunately they are short duration. The only proven long duration is hydro pumped storage which CA should be incenting. Also for a state prone to drought conditions it amazes me they haven't pushed desalinization plants. Produce fresh water from sea water during the belly of the duck curve and over night , then come off-line during the morning and evening ramps.

wasn't there a situation in Colorado where the utility offered new smart thermostats to customers with a $200 rebate, or something like that, and then when there was a heat wave, the utility prevented anyone from turning their thermostats down below 78 degrees. My sense is this is going to be their next step. in NJ, where I live, there have been numerous offers to get a brand new smart thermostat from JCP&L, with as many incentives as they can figure out. not sure who is taking them up, but I am sure many are.
